Meaning of the Surya namaskar shirt design by Lakesh
Surya Namaskara also known in English as “Sun Salutation” is a common sequence of asanas. Its origins lie in the worship of Surya, the Hindu sun god. This sequence of movements and asanas can be practiced at different levels of consciousness. Ranging from physical exercise, to a complete sadhana that incorporates asanas, pranayama, mantra and chakra meditation. Often it is vinyasa starting within a longer yoga series. Surya Namaskara may also refer to other styles of “Greetings to the Sun”.
Surya namaskar Practice
The physical basis of the practice combines twelve asanas in a series performed dynamically. These asanas alternately stretch the spine back and forth . Two groups of these twelve postures make a complete round of surya namaskar ( with a change in the second group so that a different leg is advanced each time). Alternate inhalation and exhalation breaths is very important to perform each asana.
Practitioners of Surya namaskar, as part of the modern tradition of yoga, prefer to do it exclusively at dawn, which Orthodox yogis consider to be a “favorable” moment from a spiritual point of view.
You start standing, with your feet together, your face facing east and your hands joined in the center of your chest, in an attitude of respect towards the Sun, while performing a deep exhalation.
